5 Stages of Residential Electrical Construction

Each process of construction is directly or indirectly related to the other. Having a bit of knowledge about each one of these is imperative even if you specialize in only one, like residential electrical construction.

East-West Electric explains the phases of residential electrical construction so you can better understand your home electrical installation. We’re the experts in Clearwater, Florida.

Phases of Electrical Construction

From a contractor’s perspective, there are two main stages for the construction of a house: wet and dry.

The wet stage refers to when the house is unprotected from moisture caused by external forces such as rain. However, the dry stage is when most electrical work is carried out as it is safe from rain and snow.

However, from an electrician’s view, there are two main phases of construction. Phase one is the rough-in, and phase two is the finish.

A Step-by-Step Guide To How the Electrical Work is Carried Out During the Construction of a House

Stage 1 – Temporary Electric Installation and Underground Conduit

Installation of a temporary electric pole takes place here since there is a lot of machinery that operates on electricity. This is because at the construction site, there is no electricity connection yet.

A backup generator may also be used in its place. Before the floor is finalized with concrete, electrical conduits are laid down, mainly if the floor plan includes receptacles.

It is the only step that takes place in the wet phase. It can usually be completed in a few hours.

Stage 2 – The Rough-in

This is when all everything from floors, windows, and doors is installed. But, the sheetrock is still left to be installed. This stage is about circuit wiring between the electric box and the wall studs. Drilling holes could be necessary.

Exhaust fans and can lights are also put up and fixed. And, since the installation of roofing is during this stage, if you have lights on the soffit in plans, here is when you put those up.

After this, the installation of all the entertainment system wiring is done. It can take a few days for small homes and up to a few months for larger ones.

Stage 3 – More Temporary Needs

This stage covers a lot of small details. When they lay the sheetrock has and no significant electrical wiring changes can take place now. They temporarily add receptacles in locations like the garage to allow convenient entrance and exit from the house.

Temperature control systems are installed in addition to a few lights and switches. These are expected to be damaged by sheetrock mud and paint, so installation is only temporary. This stage can usually be completed in one day.

Stage 4 – The Finish

In the final stage,  the installation of all switchboards, fans, lights, receptacles, HVAC systems, and external electrical items takes place.

This process can take a few days for small houses and between a few weeks and a few months for larger homes.

Stage 5 – Modifications and Warrant

This stage is the testing stage. This is where everything is checked to see whether the wiring has been done correctly or not. So, if anything has been miswired or something is not working, it can be fixed in time before the owner moves in.
